In June 2011 I landed in Athens to cover the general strike.
Since 2009 Greece had been facing the worst economic crisis since the Second World War. Austerity measures implemented by the government to obtain bailout loans from the International Monetary Found and European Central Bank were bringing the population to its knees. The demonstration ended up in violent clashes with the police.
I went back one year later, it was election season.
An economic crisis, protests, poverty, unemployment,
the emergence of an ultra right wing party all colluded with the police,
these were all the ingredients of a social-economic crisis that could have brought Greece back to a dangerous past and the Euro zone to collapse.
